Five Tips For Improving Your Lay-Up

Shooting from a distance is certainly an admirable and valuable skill in basketball, especially those fantastic three pointers. And the slam dunk is like the Cadillac of the game. But the lay-up is just as much if not more important because of its versatility. Being able to lay-up shot after shot opens up basketball goals from a wide range of different situations.





Indeed, a player with a mean lay-up seems unstoppable. Here are some tips to get you going.





1. Dive Forward





Never pause to think or set up for a lay-up-you should always be pushing forward. If you have to slow down to make sure you hit the right spot on the backboard, it is only because you haven't practiced enough. Practice until it is intuitive and make sure when you play you are always running into your lay-ups.





2. Spring from Your Dominant Leg





As you move into a jump, you want to leap from one leg-whichever is strongest-rather than square up and try to get the power of both. This also helps to keep in motion. As you put your leading leg forward, bend the kneed and use the leg to propel yourself into the jump.





3. Use Your Arms for Momentum





As you launch off your leg, give your arms and upward swing to get them up as far towards the basket as possible without loosening your control of the ball (it should be in two solid hands). The ball will stay in both hands until you reach the peak of your jump and then you can transfer all control into the hand that will be performing the lay-up movement.





Do not release it prematurely.





4. Positioning is Key





Always avoid laying up while facing the basket directly on-it is too difficult to establish the correct depth perception when you do this. Instead, approach the basket from either side. Your focus should be on the basket the entire time, all the way through your jump, rather than on other players, and this will help you get the smooth, confident momentum you need.





5. Practice Without Opposition





Watch a player with strong lay-ups and you will see that they lay the ball up into the basket as if no one is even there, even when they are crowded in. This type of smooth shot takes lots of practice, so that every move in the lay-up is intuitive and doesn't have to be thought through. Then you just look for your opening and go for it.





Spend lots of time practicing with no one else around so when it comes time for group practice or games, you have the movements down pat. Proper lay-up technique is a crucial skill, and any skill in basketball takes hours of repetition.

Top 3 Basketball Training Drill

Are you in the need to familiarize yourself in basketball? This article serves as your guide to becoming a much better basketball player using 3 super effective basketball training drills. Keep in mind that the number one key to becoming a great basketball player is to have self-assurance and passion. If you're not certain and confident, you'll never reach the level you want to be at. Indeed, without passion, you won't have what it takes to come through in hard situations when your team needs you most.

Now, here are the 3 super effective drills that I talked about: Think fast drill- In this drills your partner forces you left or right. Dribble with the hand needed depending on where the defender is forcing you to go. Go in strong and cross back to the other side and take a shot, or drive in towards the rim.

Butterfly drill- You have to begin with the ball in both hands in a position low to the ground, and drop the ball in front of you and dribble first with your better hand this should be a crossover dribble, then with the weak hand, this dribble should be between your legs. When the ball has gone through your legs, go behind your back. This is not too tricky. The purpose is to get the ball going as fast as possible, and to gain total control over the drill. It's called the "Butterfly" because when you have mastered this, you will look like a butterfly while performing the drill.

Double Jab Step drill- When you obtain the ball go to the triple threat mode, use a fake jab step then jab step again and finally after that attempt use another but this time go right past than your defender.

You have to be comfortable with crossover dribbles both conventional and between the legs. Make certain to keep your head up, and don't ever stop until you master this.

Basketball training program greatly helps to be fast, light and agile with an excellent endurance and powers of recovery. For this reason strength conditioning and plyometric training are a compulsory part of professional player's training as they are known to increase player's speed, acceleration and jumping ability. Speed endurance is a critical factor for basketball players because they continually repeat high intensity activities during matches with small resting periods. Training program for basketball is mainly broken down into four phases in years. Furthermore each of the phases focuses concentrates on a particular fitness development program thus offering participants a progressive buildup to top fitness and performance.

Professional basketball training presently focuses mostly on weights and strength development which we are about to look at. Thus a year-long training program would be as outlined below:

Early pre-season- During this time which precedes the offseason, players are making preparations for the onset of the season. Emphasis is placed on achieving peak strength by concentrating on aerobic fitness and functional strength. When this occurs focus will be on converting the peak strength into muscular power through plyometric workout. This phase should last for at least 4 weeks before onset of the competitive season. 3 strength training sessions separated by 48 hours each would be sufficient to build maximal strength.

Late pre-season- Start of the season is around the corner and pre-season trials are imminent. In this phase of basketball training focus is on building anaerobic fitness, maximum strength and power. Polymeric training is applied to convert newfound strength into basketball specific power on the lower part of the torso with rebounding exercises like depth jumps. The upper torso is worked with medicine balls. Please note that it should not be overdone even when you have the feeling like you haven't had enough as it can result into burnouts.

In season- During this phase competition is already underway and emphasis is on players to try and maintain their achieved speed during the previous phases, aerobic and anaerobic fitness and strength power. Though during this course players are likely to lose some maximal strength, as long as they maintain a high level of muscular power they earned previously they will fare well in competitions. During this phase the players are encouraged to spend at least a session in the weight room and plyometric training.

Off season- Probably you won the title and you feel the desire to relax and wait for the pre-season. During this phase of basketball training focus is on rest and recovery and some several weeks break from serious fitness and strength training will be helpful but should be accompanied with maintenance of light activity e.g. light weight lifting and cross training. Exercises should focus on stabilizing muscles and core stability. This low-intensity functional strength phase workouts help to restore balance and its objectives are to prepare the athlete joints, ligaments and tendons for the upcoming intense exercises in the coming phases, strengthen neglected stabilizer muscles, balance both sides of the body by correcting imbalances between flexors and extensors. This phase is very crucial and should not be overlooked as it is a determinant of the strength quality and power one develops in later phases.

Role-specific Training

An effective basketball training program requires participants before embarking on training to first warm up and after training to try to cool down. It is important to note that just like in other sports, in a basketball team members have different roles to play and require different physical attributes. Guards are required to attain speed and be more agile which the main requirements for their mobility training are, and to focus less on strength and bulk unlike centers and power forwards. For this reason guards are encouraged to lift heavy objects with minimum repetitions and longer resting period between sets for them to build strength with less bulk. Huge players would use a program with more repetitions and minimum rest between sets which speeds up strength and bulk.

When training for basketball there are a few key areas that you should focus on. You will need to master your agility, your endurance, and your dexterity skills. All of these will lead you to becoming a very good basketball player and they will help you enjoy the game whether you play as a professional or you simply enjoy a good pick up game in your neighborhood.

When you first begin you will want to work on your conditioning and build up your endurance and stamina. To do this you can work out in a gym to achieve your desired endurance results. You can start out doing a series of wind sprints. These are quick sprints that are done at maximum speed across the length of the gym. You will do a series of 10 of these or push yourself to exhaustion. Next you will do a series of stair climbing. Since the entire game of basketball is played on your feet and you are constantly moving and jumping you will need to be light on your feet and be able to jump very high. Stair climbing will help you to attain this desired level of jumping and endurance ability. If you have stadium seating in your gym you can simply do 3 sets of running up and down every stairway in the gym. This exercise should last about 30 minutes. To complete your endurance training you will do a series of suicides drills. For this exercise you will start at the base line and run to the closest foul line, then you will run to the 3 point line, then run to the half court line, then run to the opposing 3 point line, the opposing foul line, and finally the opposing base line. You should complete this exercise at full speed and repeat 5 times for maximum result.

To work on your agility and dexterity you can combine drills that will work on both of these skills. You should start by placing a series of cones in a straight line down the length of the gym. While dribbling the basketball you will run at full speed, weaving in and out of each cone. If you lose control of the basketball you will go back to the beginning and start all over. The next drill will be a tip drill. You will need at least 5 people to complete this drill, the lesser the number of people the more challenging the exercise. You will begin by running to the glass backboard and tipping the ball off of the glass. The person in line behind you will catch the rebound and tip it back off of the glass. The next person will do the same and you will continue this pattern for 5 minutes.

It's the summer of 2011 and the CBA is having a collapse of biblical proportions, creating a scenario where every player in the NBA becomes a Free Agent. Who do you go after to run the point for your franchise in the coming years? Sorry Nash, Kidd and Billups but your services are no longer required here. We're looking into the future to find the best at the point position for years to come.

10) Raymond Felton--Who would have thought Raymond Felton would round out this list a year ago? Apparently Donnie Walsh, Mike D'Antoni and company did when they signed him to a two-year 15.8 million dollar contract over this past summer. Felton leads all point guards in MPG (6th overall) logging an impressive 38.9. What makes it even more impressive is that he's doing it running D'Antoni's uptempo, NBA Points Per Game leading offense. Averaging 18.2 and 8.7 to go along with almost 2 steals a game he seems to be a perfect fit in New York and on my fantasy team. However, his inability to finish around the basket and shoot at a high percentage from deep is what separates him from the top of the class.

9) Tyreke Evans--One of only four players in history to average at least 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in his rookie campaign (Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan and LeBron James were the other three). Easy to see why he grabbed rookie of the year honors in the 2009-2010 season. Gets to the rim at will with a quick first step and finishes. The tallest of all the guards on this list at 6'6, he can cause fits on the defensive end, when he wants to. His inability to shoot the basketball consistently hurts him at times. Evans can also tend to lack of effort on the court and maturity off of it, dropping him to the 9 spot.

8) Stephen Curry--Flat out the best shooting point guard in the NBA. Hands down, period. With a quick trigger and money off the dribble he's deadly from downtown, at 44%, and the line where he's likely to be a career 90% shooter. But, it's his under-rated ability to see the floor and play the pick and roll that makes him so special. Where it normally takes years to master, Curry stepped right in like he had been running the pick and roll his whole life. His lack of size and ability to get to the line is the only thing keeping him from rising on this list.

7) Tony Parker--At number 7 on our list is Tony Parker. As long as your name isn't Eva Longoria or Brent Barry, you would love to have this guy running the show. Three time NBA Champion and 2007 Finals MVP, Parker proved to us he can play the point at a Championship level. He has an extra gear, getting him into the paint, where he can score with the best of them. His shooting ability is a little below average and at 28 years of age he's the senior citizen of this list.

6) Russell Westbrook--Freakishly athletic with loads of upside. Couple his athleticism with great size and you can see why he's leading all point guards in rebounding, at a shade under five a game. The only thing holding Westbrook back from being one of the greats in the NBA right now is his jump shot. His shooting percentage,.436, is much too low for someone that gets to the rim as often as Westbrook. That said, we saw glimpses of greatness in the World Championships this past summer. Westbrook took over for periods of time on a team filled with perennial All-Stars.

5) John Wall--Another super-athletic point guard with upside through the roof. At 6'4 with lightning quickness and jump out of the gym ability, Wall should live at the line. These abilities should also turn him into a shut down defender. However, his jump shot is still very raw and he's been known to turn the ball over at extremely high rates in the past. Even so, Wall should probably be higher on this list with his talent level but we'll let him prove it to us first.

4) Rajon Rondo--Rondo leads the league with 14 Assists Per Game. That's three more per game than the next closest player, Steve Nash. He loves to get his teammates involved and is great at finishing around the rim. He's a great rebounder, making him a triple double threat every time he steps on the court. Rondo's huge wing span turns him into a disruptive beast on the defensive end. His shot, however, is almost laughable. Defenders dare him to shoot at times. Even with this lack of a jump shot, he was still the MVP of the Celtics championship run last season.

3) Derrick Rose--Another ultra-athletic point guard with great speed and strength. Rose is great at finishing in the paint, using his patented floater to his advantage. He's been on an offensive tear this year, leading both the Bulls and all point guards scoring around 24 a game. Rose is still a little weak shooting from long range but his mid-range game and athletic ability trump his inability to shoot the long ball.

2) Chris Paul--This guy is a   rel=nofollow [http://www.fantazzle.com/]fantasy owners dream. CP3 possesses one of the best handles and passing abilities in the NBA. He runs the pick and roll to perfection and can blow by defenders with lightning quick speed. He's also a menace on the defensive end, averaging almost 3 steals a game in the 2010 season. It was tough not to put Paul at number one on our list but there is one big concern. He's coming off surgery for a torn meniscus removing the torn portion entirely. This scares some into thinking microfracture surgery may be coming sometime in the future.

1) Deron Williams--The point guard we covet most of all, Deron Williams. He can do it all; score, pass, rebound and he's a great leader on the floor. It always seems as if Williams knows exactly what his team needs. He's a very strong guard with great finishing ability. Just like Paul, Williams runs the pick and roll to perfection. Jerry Sloan couldn't find a better player to run his offense, and neither could we.

- The entire program is in HD video which is the first time I’ve seen that in a basketball product.
- The 2 bonuses that come with the program are amazing and they actually complement the program very well.

What I Didn’t like About Crossover Machine

There’s nothing I can really say I didn’t like about the program. The only thing I think John could have done a little better with the program is included a bit more moves but that’s really being picky since there’s 13 moves in the main program alone without counting all the moves and techniques in the 2 bonuses.

The Verdict

The bonuses that come with Crossover Machine alone, are worth more than twice the price of the product. The step by step format and HD videos make it easy to understand everything and the moves and techniques in the program are literally unstoppable once you learn them. Overall, I think Crossover Machine is a great basketball training program and I think any serious basketball player should own a copy of this product.

White Men Can't Jump [VHS]Writer-director Ron Shelton's 1992 follow-up to the baseball comedy-drama Bull Durham involves a different sport: basketball, as played on the neighborhood hustler circuit. Woody Harrelson is Billy Hoyle, a good shooter using his white complexion to fool black players into thinking he can be stomped in easy bets. Billy's banter-filled matchup against Sidney Deane (Wesley Snipes) on a public court leads to a partnership in which Sidney becomes Billy's manager, taking the white outsider on a tour of the tougher sections of Los Angeles, where he plays homeboys for a few bucks. Inevitably, the two come apart over their innate competitiveness, a situation that has to be reevaluated after Billy gets into trouble with some underworld creditors. Meanwhile, Billy's girlfriend (Rosie Perez) sits at home preparing herself for a maybe-someday date appearance on Jeopardy. As with all of Shelton's sports-related movies (Tin Cup, his script for The Best of Times), White Men Can't Jump is less about the fine points of the game than it is the rules by which players survive it. The script is literate and crackling with wit and satire (a scene in which a politician sponsors a black-white "solidarity" game is hilarious). The actors are entirely in sync, and the scenes under and around the hoops are a thrill to watch. --Tom Keogh
